The National Medical Commission has introduced updated regulations for studying MBBS abroad. Below are the new guidelines that foreign medical graduates must adhere to in order to receive permanent registration for practicing medicine in India:
1. He/She is an Indian citizen or has received Overseas Citizenship of India and holds a primary medical qualification recognized for registration as a medical practitioner in the country where the institution that awarded the qualification is located.
2. Foreign Medical Graduates must complete a minimum duration of 54 months of medical course in a foreign country.
3. Graduates must undergo a mandatory one-year internship in the same foreign medical institution
4. The instructions for the MBBS course in medical universities abroad must be in English medium.
5. Graduates must undergo a mandatory one-year internship in the same foreign medical institution
6. A foreign medical graduate is required to complete a supervised internship in India for at least one year after applying to the Commission; and must have passed the National Exit Test (NExT) or another exam mandated by the Commission.
1. These regulations will not be applicable to
A). Foreign Medical Graduates who obtained their medical degree or primary qualification from overseas prior to the enactment of these regulations;
B). Candidates currently studying MBBS outside the country before these regulations take effect;
C). Foreign medical graduates who receive explicit exemptions from the Commission or the Central Government through official notification.
2. Foreign Medical Graduates who hold an MBBS degree from overseas or any comparable qualification, as well as those currently studying at medical universities abroad prior to the enforcement of these regulations, will be subject to the previously applicable regulations.
3. The commission reserves the authority to deny permanent medical practice registration if the candidate violates laws related to public policy or national security.
Criteria for recognition of Foreign Medical Graduates to practice medicine in India

A course of theory, practice, and clinical training that is comparable to an Indian Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) should have been completed by foreign medical graduates.
Hands-on training in clinical areas such as community medicine, general medicine, psychiatry, paediatrics, general surgery, anesthesia, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopaedics, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, dermatology, emergency or casualty services, laboratory services, and their subspecialties should have been completed by graduates of the program.
